ONSW ASC Expansion Projects 2017-2018

After a successful foray into new areas in Spring 2017, we are going back for more in Winter 2018. And it's FREE!

ONSW will be putting on weekends (see the tables below for details) in Port Macquarie and Northern Sydney to promote our sport to new audiences.

You won't need a compass - if you can read a street directory you can do it. These events mix exercise - at whatever pace you like (walk, jog or run) - with a simple navigational challenge.  It's a great way to explore your suburb or a new area.

You have 45 minutes to get to as many of the 30 checkpoints (called controls) as you can, using the specially prepared map of the area (click here for an example). The controls are worth different amounts (10, 20 and 30 points), and you have time to plan your route before starting. For each minute late you lose 10 points - so time management is important. 

You can go solo, with a buddy or in a small group (friends or family members).

Beginners are most welcome and will receive basic instruction.

SportIdent electronic timing will be used at all events. We ask for a $10 refundable deposit on the SI sticks. The sticks record each control you visit and how long it took to do each 'leg'. When you return, you hit the 'Finish' unit, then download where you get a 'splits' printout showing your gross and nett scores, and the time you spent on course.

Our post-event scenes are often very social as participants compare routes and split times.

You get to keep the map as a souvenir of your participation. You may like to later revisit some public areas (bush tracks, parks, reserves etc) that you only just discovered through orienteering.
