Congratulations to Garingal legends Barbara and Ron Junghans who have been presented with a prestigious Distinguished Long Service Award by Sport NSW.This award recognises individual officials, coaches, administrators, and event organisers who have demonstrated extraordinary unwavering dedication to fostering and advancing sport in their communities for over 25 years.
The Junghans were among 26 such recipients at the annual Sport NSW community sport awards, held on Monday.
“They have been dedicated champions for their sport and have provided a magnificent community legacy for others to aspire to and follow,” said Sport NSW Chief Executive Stuart Hodge.
Massive congrats to Garingal’s Cooper Horley and ACT’s Elye Dent who dead-heated for silver in the JWOC Sprint in Sweden on Monday night!
Cooper is the first NSW foot orienteer to win a medal at a world champs and only the second overall (after Lucy Mackie’s silver at MTBO JWOC in 2017).
The pair finished in 14m13s, some 17 seconds behind the winner Matthieu Buehrer of Switzerland.
The lads teamed up in the Mixed Sprint Relay on Tuesday evening for another podium finish (5th) to continue their great form.

- Started Orienteering in 2002, joining Garingal Orienteers.
- Currently running W55AS, a great age class which incorporates a “Chocolate Leg” at all State Leagues.
- Have Orienteered locally and overseas, most memorable event to date, Lapland Sprint (Levi) running through the town and around Reindeers.
- Previous career, Scientific Photographer at the largest photographic studio in Sydney, providing support across New South Wales. Written and published training manuals, and trained numerous colleagues in photographic techniques.
- Also have worked as an Interviewer for NSW Transport and Australian Bureau of Statistics.
- Worked as part of a team, to instigate “Spooks in the Park” Orienteering event.
- As a ONSW Board Member, with a professional photographic background, I hope to bring a fresh, modern vision to the sport through visual communication and innovative thinking.

- Started orienteering in Canberra in 1978 and become hooked on pursuing the elusive error-free run
- Have competed in thousands of orienteering events, spanning at least 17 countries, plus many rogaines; Australian Orienteer of the Year in 1997 (joint).
- Member of 4 orienteering clubs: Northside Navigators and Red Roos (ACT), New England OC (USA) and Uringa
- First career as an economist with Australian Treasury. Highlights included branch head in tax policy during 1985 tax reforms
- In 1987, switched to investment banking, almost entirely with Macquarie Bank in Sydney (Division Director in equity capital markets)
- Formal qualifications include a PhD in economics (MIT) and a BSc Hons degree plus diploma from Company Directors Association of Australia
- As a Board member, my focus will be enhancing the orienteering experience, streamlining administration and event conduct, and increasing participation
